Safety Tips
Most buyers and sellers are genuine, but a few simple habits keep you safe from scams.
For buyers
- See the item before you pay. Meet in a busy public place in daylight, like a shopping centre car park.
- Pay when you have the item in your hands. Cash or an instant bank transfer on the spot are safest.
- Never pay with gift cards, crypto or overseas money transfers, and never pay a “deposit to hold it” to someone you haven’t met.
- If you need postage, use a payment method with buyer protection, such as PayPal Goods and Services.
- Look for the Verified Seller badge, and check the item and serial numbers match the photos.
For sellers
- Don’t post the item until the money is in your account. Wait for it to clear, not just a screenshot.
- Watch out for buyers who “overpay” and ask for the difference back. It’s a common scam.
- Never click payment or courier links sent by a buyer. Log in to your bank or PayPal yourself.
- Keep your home address private until you are ready to meet, and bring someone with you.
For everyone
- Keep your messages on AusPlates, so we can help if something goes wrong.
- AusPlates will never ask for your password, bank details or a payment to “unlock” a sale.
- If something feels wrong, stop, and use the Report button on the listing.
AusPlates is a place to connect buyers and sellers. We don’t take part in the sale, and we can’t refund money paid between members.
